A sharp drop in machine-tool orders in July doesn`t have the industry`s trade group worried. The National Machine Tool Builders` Association blamed a seasonal slowdown for the 19.7 percent drop from June. The association expects orders to improve steadily in coming months because of the weaker dollar. ”American-made machine tools are becoming more competitive in the international market, a fact reflected in our improving export orders,” said James A. Gray, the trade group`s president. And in the U.S. market, foreign- manufactured machine tools aren`t ”the bargain they once were,” Gray said.
