Jim Sundberg started behind the plate Tuesday in place of Jody Davis.

”I think Sundberg needs to play to stay sharp,” said manager Gene Michael.

Leon Durham missed starting his second straight game because of sinus congestion. Rafael Palmeiro started at first again Tuesday. ”It`s nice to have a replacement like Palmeiro available,” said Michael.

With 33 saves, reliever Lee Smith has a shot at Bruce Sutter`s Cub record of 37 saves set in 1979. Sutter had 35 saves on Sept. 1, 1979.

Left-hander Mike Mason was activated Tuesday after spending time on the disabled list with tendinitis. He threw a simulated game before Tuesday`s regularly scheduled game at the Astrodome.
