Daryl Boston will be among the four September callups, the Sox announced Monday. No. 1 draft pick Jack McDowell, Adam Peterson, and John Pawlowski, all pitchers, also will join the Sox after Double A Birmingham completes its playoffs, which start Thursday.

The Sox weren`t sure they would bring up Boston, who was demoted earlier in August. But he impressed them at Triple A Hawaii, where he hit .301 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 19 games. Boston was the only player called up from the Triple A club, an indication of how weak the Sox are at that level. Two players who didn`t get a call were Tim Hulett and Ron Karkovice, both in the Sox`s Opening Day lineup.

The White Sox`s elevation of McDowell was part of an agreement the two parties had when he signed in July. McDowell was 1-2 with a 7.84 earned run average with Birmingham.

Peterson, 21, is regarded as one of the Sox`s top pitching prospects. He`s 12-9 with a 3.90 ERA. Pawlowski is a starter-turned-reliever, where he posted a 3.13 ERA with 25 strikeouts in 27 innings. Overall, he`s 5-6 with a 4.76 ERA.

Pawlowski, who was converted to a reliever in midseason, is 5-6 with a 4.76 ERA.

Pitcher Neil Allen, released by the Sox last weekend, worked out with the Yankees Monday in hopes of earning a spot with the team during the stretch. Allen began his career with the Mets.

The Sox were encouraged with the progress of Ozzie Guillen`s left knee, which he injured Saturday. ”It`s much better,” said trainer Herm Schneider. ”It doesn`t look like he has any cartilage damage. If he hadn`t felt as good today, I probably would have had that checked tomorrow.”

Guillen, though, probably will be out for most of the week, a prospect that doesn`t please him. ”I want to try to get out there as quickly as possible,” Guillen said. ”It`s no fun on the bench.”

The Sox received word that Bob James` father died Monday. James flew to California Sunday. Sox manager Jim Fregosi didn`t know how long the pitcher would be gone.

Bill Long (8-6) went for the Sox Tuesday night in the opening game of a three- game series at Comiskey Park against the Texas Rangers.

Home runs by Dave Cochrane and Randy Gomez sparked the Hawaii Islanders past the Vancouver Canadians 5-2 in Vancouver.
