McClatchy Newspapers Inc., seeking to avoid the disputes that have prompted the sale of other family-controlled publishing firms, has filed for an initial public offering of 2.4 million shares of its Class A common shares. The Sacramento company, controlled by the McClatchy family, owns 12 newspapers in California, Alaska and Washington. Employees were informed last July that the company was considering going public.
