An ordinance that would allow funeral homes throughout Chicago to cremate bodies on their premises was voted down unanimously by the City Council Zoning Committee Monday despite assurances from funeral directors and other witnesses that such facilities do not emit smoke, odors or ash. Ald. Danny Davis (29th), committee chairman, said the committee would be open to discussions on a compromise ordinance for special-use permits for individual funeral homes.
