Terry Labonte ran away from the field Sunday to win the Holly Farms 400 NASCAR stock car race at North Wilkesboro (N.C.) Speedway, ending a string of 50 races without a victory. Labonte earned his seventh career victory-and $45,575-by holding off Dale Earnhardt. The victory was the first for Labonte since March, 1986, at Rockingham, N.C. It also kept alive a streak for car owner Junior Johnson, who has won at least one race as a driver or car owner every year since 1965. Labonte averaged 96.072 miles an hour in the race slowed by four caution flags.
British champion Steve Soper and Pierre Dieudonne of Belgium drove their Ford Sierra Cosworth RS 500 to victory in the James Hardie 1000 in Bathurst, Australia, the eighth round of the World Touring Car Australia Championship.
