The Tribune`s editorial page of Nov. 19 reminded this reader of the double standard some newspaper publishers and citizens assume when evaluating the actions of members of their preferred political party. ”A Heavy thud but not much else” is a case in point.

The results of the Iran-contra scandal are bound to have far-reaching effects on future generations, unless we in this generation are willing to recognize there was a grave breach of honor, honesty, respect for law and reverence for our constitutional form of government. Can we honestly tolerate such behavior?

President Reagan`s inattentive, laissez faire approach to government, foreign and domestic, is greeted almost unanimously and consistently by members of the Republican Party and Mr. Reagan`s admirers with acceptance. No other administration, Republican or Democratic, would have been judged so gently by a respectable and respected newspaper as to have the affair described as ”marked as much by unaccountably naive bumbling and failures as by truly misplaced and obviously unacceptable zealotry.”

I cannot escape the conviction that what we do today, how we judge honesty, integrity and commitment to honor, will determine the direction our future will take.
