Florida State`s Paul McGowan was named winner of the 1987 Butkus award as the nation`s best collegiate linebacker. The 11-member selection panel declared McGowan a one-point winner over Ohio State senior Chris Spielman. McGowan had 134 tackles, 11 tackles for losses, and two recovered fumbles this season. . . . Mike White of Illinois will coach the North in the 50th annual Blue-Gray All-Star Classic Christmas Day in Montgomery, Ala. Steve Spurrier of Duke will coach the South.

Lloyd Honeyghan, who lost his world welterweight title to Mexico`s Jorge Vaca in October, has decided to continue boxing after spending six weeks seriously considering retirement, British press reports said. They said the 27-year-old Briton, unbeaten until Vaca took away his World Boxing Council crown, has decided to seek a return match with the Mexican in London next April.
