Clarence Page (Jan. 20), like Paul Simon, completely misunderstands Robert Bork`s statement that ”what a court adds to one person`s
constitutional rights, it subtracts from the rights of others.”
The Constitution guarantees us many rights, but we all possess the same rights. A court cannot grant a person more rights than the Constitution guarantees. To do so means discrimination against those people not granted those ”extra” rights.
Simon is right in saying ”when you expand the liberty of any of us, you expand the liberty of all of us.” But this in no way contradicts Bork`s statement. Liberty is a right guaranteed by the Constitution. The problems occur when the courts bypass the other branches of government and add to the Constitution illegally.
