As a native Calgarian, I took special interest in Bernie Lincicome`s column Feb. 10 in which he gave his assessment of the city hosting this year`s Winter Olympics. Mr. Lincicome`s reference to his hosts as being ”dimly human” and his allusions to Calgarians` stupidity are appalling. His depiction of Calgary as a remote, uncivilized backwash is simply not accurate. Calgary is a small, modern city in the process of maturation after a period of incredible growth. Although it cannot claim to possess many of the established economic and cultural institutions of a city such as Chicago, Calgary also lacks Chicago`s crime, poverty and racism.

Mr. Lincicome`s attack on Calgary is uncalled for and only exposes his ignorance and closed-mindedness. If this was a failed attempt at humor, it also exposes Mr. Lincicome`s dull wit.
