Oft-injured Scott Sanderson made his 1988 debut Saturday, going five innings in a Midwest League game.

He wasn`t involved in the decision as the Peoria Chiefs beat the Clinton Giants 2-1.

Sanderson allowed four hits and one unearned run. He struck three and walked none.

The Cub right-hander, who is on rehabiliation assignment, had surgery on his back to remove a disc in February.

Last season with the Cubs, Sanderson, 31, was 7-7 as a starter and 1-2 with two saves in 10 relief appearances. He opened the season on the 15-day disabled list with tenderness in his right shoulder.
