Louis Silverstein, professor at Columbia College, writes that ”peace studies” are necessary in higher education to ”balance” other programs, such as history courses, which ”more often than not, study war after war,”

(but not the causes, Prof. Silverstein?) and ROTC.

The professor seems to assume that ROTC programs are inherently ”pro-war,” which is a false assumption. The common element running through every war in human history is that those starting it thought that they could win. Consequently, whatever prevents such a calculation-such as, for example, the ROTC programs and other efforts toward military preparededness by nonagressive nations-is the real ”peace study.”
