Some winners in a recent week:
The Priority of the Week: Gov. Thompson vetoed a $1.2 million appropriation which would have taken a major step toward the creation of an Engineering and Research Center for Northern Illinois University. Only a short time ago, Gov. Thompson made into law an award of $30 million for the Sox stadium.
The Quote of the Week: Commonwealth Edison, trying to justify cutting off power for some of its major customers even though Com Ed was using only about 80 percent of its capacity: ”The cutoff . . . is clearly the price the customers pay for cheap power.” We should be so lucky! We are now paying 59 percent more for electricity than do the customers of Illinois Power. If Com Ed`s requested rate increase goes through, we will be paying 102 percent more than is paid by Illinois Power customers.
The Most Outstanding Talent Displayed by a Corporation: The time, effort and genius it must have taken by Com Ed to figure out that summer comes every year at this time; the intense study of weather forecasts to determine when the hottest days would be; and the cool calculation it must have taken to have seven of its plants out of action or not operating at normal rates at this particular and exact time.
