Bobby Driskel, 25, who was spared the death penalty by a jury in July, was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without possibility of parole for stabbing four people to death in the Henry Horner Homes two years ago.
Cook County Criminal Court Judge Joseph Urso also ordered Driskel`s codefendant, Lawrence Jackson, 24, to be put to death on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 24. Appeals are certain to delay the execution.
Separate juries convicted Driskel and Jackson of the four murders;
Jackson`s jury sentenced him to death, but Driskel`s could not agree on capital punishment. Urso also sentenced both men to 60 years in prison for the attempted murder of Urica Winder, a 6-year-old girl who was stabbed 48 times and left for dead during the same incident.
Those killed in the knife attack in September, 1986, were Urica`s mother, Vernita Winder, 22; her boyfriend, Mark ”Tiny” Brown, 25, who was Driskel`s cousin; Winder`s daughter, Dana, 4; and Shirley Martin, 23.
