The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation announced Tuesday that it has awarded grants to 26 Chicago-area public libraries, and to a total of 85 libraries throughout the state, to help them obtain copies of classic Public Broadcasting Station video productions.
The funds are part of an overall $6 million grant, of which $1.5 million was used for marketing and $4.5 million was awarded in grants and assistance, a foundation spokesman said.
The grants, part of 1,244 made nationwide, will extend the foundation`s Library Video Classics Project.
The project has helped 2,014 libraries obtain 20 popular PBS series, such as ”The Jewel in the Crown” and ”I, Claudius,” at one-tenth their actual cost, according to the foundation.
