Those black members of the city council who refer to another black member as an ”Uncle Tom” are only reinforcing their diminutive stature. Where else in all literature can you find a hero uttering such noble words as Uncle Tom telling Simon Legree, ”You can whip my poor old body but you can`t hurt my soul”?
