This is in response to William Safire`s column, ”Good Germans, Libya and makers of poison gas,” Jan. 4.
”Pictures suggest a poison-gas factory is being built in Libya” and he suspects that a German whitewash will show that other nations are involved. He therefore ”calls for prompt obliteration” of this plant.
The U.S. is the world`s largest seller of arms. If we were to go along with Safire`s reasoning, then the Russians would have every right to
”obliterate” our factories which produced the arms used against the Russians in Afghanistan, Ortega would have the right to do the same, and so would the Palestinians-those bullets, bombs and planes used by the Israelis were made in the U.S. This evidence is not based on suggestions.
