The Bigelow Group has opened a model of its Country House at Lakewood Estates, a subdivision of 34 semicustom, single-family houses in northwest suburban Hawthorn Woods.
The original Country House was built at Bigelow`s Southlight development in Aurora. That residence was featured as the Home of the Year in the February issue of Country Living magazine.
”When we develop the Home of the Year,” said Juta Ristsoo, building and architecture editor for Country Living magazine,” we have a specific concept and architectural style we are looking for and from that base we find a builder and a home that can realize that ideal. Also, we wanted to show home buyers that a residence could be built with an old home feel and something new in technology.”
The Country Home, in Cape Cod style, features a permanent wood foundation, which provides a drier, warmer basement, according to the American Wood Council.
”Although most people think wood foundations are something new, Soldier Field and the Empire State Building have stood on wood foundations for decades,” said Perry Bigelow, president of the Bigelow Group.
Other design features include all-wood siding, cedar shake roof, and a cedar-walled bath. ”All this adds to energy efficiency, and we guarantee that your yearly heating bill won`t exceed $200,” said Bigelow.
”After the magazine came out, we had more than 150 visitors on a recent weekend at the (Aurora) Country House,” said John Kamin, Bigelow vice president.
Priced from $279,900, the Country House at Lakewood Estates duplicates the one in Aurora. A two-story with three bedrooms and two baths, it has 2,200 square feet of living area.
TV viewers will get a chance to look at the house at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 21 when it will be shown on ”This Old House” on WTTW-Ch. 11.
