Orland Park is considering a plan to force people convicted of drunken-driving or drug-related charges to repay the village for the cost of their arrest and prosecution. The Village Board on Monday told its staff to research a similar program in California to see whether one could be implemented in Orland Park.

”We will be offering some help to the people out there who are endangering their lives,” said Trustee William Ciccone, who suggested the plan. ”And they will be paying for the problems they are creating.”

Officials had no details on how much revenue such a law might generate. But Ciccone, a candidate for mayor, said the amount could be substantial because it would cover paperwork and testing as well as time spent by police and court-appointed attorneys.
