Julian Simon`s recent article is a remarkable illustration of how short-sighted and unenlightened many Americans are on the importance of
environmental conservation.
He implies that waste is not bad, perhaps even desirable. But the points Simon makes-war-torn Berlin, for example-are not altruistic efforts by man to ”bestow benefits on future generations.” They are merely the correction of a gross mistake that should have never been made in the first place.
The fact that Berliners built ”lovely recreation spots” from bombed-out neighborhoods did not make the events of World War II acceptable. No one should be fooled into thinking that we`re leaving our children a great resource by creating millions of tons of trash and toxic filth.
