Your article criticizing the national media`s coverage of the Chicago mayoral primary was an exercise in the worst kind of civic pride: a false pride that is blind to our true faults. Quibbling over whether the recent campaign was ”the most racially divided vote since black candidates began running for City Hall in the 1970s,” as the New York Times reported, only sidetracks the public from the truth about our city: Racism and racial polarization are at the heart of what ails this community.
Instead of taking a defensive posture against what others say about our city, we should have the courage to admit that others may see what we wish not to see.
