Welcome back?: . . Rookie Jeremy Roenick could be recalled again if Troy Murray is sidelined by a bruised hip. But General Manager Bob Pulford said Thursday that the 19-year-old Roenick had to be returned to his junior hockey club in the Quebec because his emergency recall status expired with the return Wednesday of Denis Savard.

”Troy`s hip is bothering him, and we`ll see what happens,” coach Mike Keenan said of Murray`s availability for Saturday`s game in Boston.

– Footsteps: With Toronto only four points away from catching the Hawks and winning a Norris Division playoff spot, Maple Leafs winger Wendel Clark is delighted by the Hawks` inconsistency.

”We control our own fate, and, hopefully, Chicago will lose control of their fate,” said Clark, who has 7 goals, 4 assists and 61 penalty minutes in the 11 games he`s played since returning from his long layoff for back problems.

– Officially speaking: The Hawks got another close shave Wednesday night with Rob Shick as the game`s referee. The 3-2 loss to the Flyers shouldn`t have been unexpected. The Hawks have lost all six of the games he`s worked this year.

– Slight delay: The Hawks have changed their plans for Wednesday`s 60th birthday party. Instead of having a pregame ceremony that might have delayed the start of the game with Quebec by as much as 1 1/2 hours, management has decided to hold the festivities between the first and second periods. The thinking is that it`ll be easier for workmen to push a 2,000-pound ice sculpture of the Stadium onto ice that`s already been used by the players in the first period rather than on fresh ice.
