– Tennis: Top-seeded Gabriela Sabatini beat Linda Ferrando 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Eckerd Open in Largo, Fla. . . . The top three seeds- Ivan Lendl, Stefan Edberg and John McEnroe-advanced to the semifinals in the $752,500 Japan Open in Tokyo. Lendl overwhelmed Nicolas Pereira of Venezuela 6-2, 6-2; Edberg beat Scott Davis 6-4, 6-2; and McEnroe, the defending champion, beat fifth-seeded Brad Gilbert 2-6, 6-4, 6-1.

– Golf: Defending champion Rosie Jones shot her second straight 68 to share the lead with Kathy Postlewait after the second round of the USX Classic in Gulfport, Fla. Both were at 8-under-par 136. . . . Chi Chi Rodriguez birdied the 18th hole for a match-play victory over Doug Dalziel that helped the United States increase its lead over the International team after two rounds of Seniors Chrysler Cup in Sarasota, Fla. The U.S. team won five matches, lost two and halved one to outscore the International team 11-5 to take a 21-11 lead.
– Yachting: The San Diego Yacht Club has been granted its request for an early (June 8) hearing to appeal a New York court decision awarding the America`s Cup to New Zealand.
