Ciccone Youth The Whitey Album (Blast First) +++
Only months after releasing the classic ”Daydream Nation,” Sonic Youth is probably entitled to a little self-indulgence-and this is it. ”Whitey” is by turns fascinating and boring, with its beat-box nightmarish guitars. There`s even one minute of ”(silence)”. Some listeners may feel cheated, but the album is redeemed by its central metaphor cover girl Louise ”Madonna”
Ciccone. She represents everything that Sonic Youth both loves and loathes about modern pop music. Included are wicked versions of Material Girl classics ”I`m Burnin` Up” and ”Into the Groove” (retitled ”Into the Groovey”)
and best of all a thorough trashing of Robert Palmer`s ”Addicted to Love.”
