The Calgary press ripped apart the Blackhawks for their poor effort in losing 3-0 in Game 1. The players read a Calgary Sun headline that said
”Enough Of These Tired Hawks, Bring On The Canadiens” and read stories in which it was said their defense, offense and goaltending are incapable of competing against Calgary.
”It can help us,” Hawks defenseman Bob Murray said of those articles.
”What do you expect from the Calgary press? They`re cocky and disrespectful. That`s fine. Most of the people writing those columns never laced up a pair of skates. So who cares what they say?”
– Defenseman Keith Brown has a bruised right forearm after taking a hard check in Game 1 from Colin Patterson. X-rays were negative, and he is expected to play Thursday.
– Flames goalie Mike Vernon, 26, has begun to show signs of maturity, according to coach Terry Crisp. That`s been reflected in his three playoff shutouts this year.
”He`s learned to handle the press and the public better,” Crisp said.
”A goaltender especially lives in a fish bowl, and things don`t bother Mike like they used to. A bad goal doesn`t bother him like it did. He`s matured greatly just from last season.”
