I agree with Mike Royko when he says vicious criminals deserve punishment, not sympathy.

I disagree when he says society deserves none of the blame. We provide our kids with a full course in violence, its methods and variations, from the time they are very little. Our movies and TV are endlessly inventive in the ways of violence. We even have a new name for the worst of the blood-and-gore movies-”splatter movies.”

This sort of insidious influence is hard to document. It doesn`t lend itself easily to cause-and-effect studies.

But does any thinking person really believe that it has no effect?

Isn`t it time to stop the flow of garbage into our children`s minds?
