Some fashion details come in and go out so fast that they`re quickly labeled fads rather than trends. Fringe, apparently, is not one of them.

The spaghetti-like strands in silk or gold, wool or leather suddenly began appearing when some trendsetting designers showed their spring clothes in Paris and Milan; then in New York, Ralph Lauren gave fringe a very American cachet in his sporty clothes inspired by the Southwest.

Now fringe promises to be a big deal for fall as well. During the recent showings of cold-weather clothes, many major designers bordered everything from turbans and stoles to evening pants with miles of fashion`s most mobile trim.
