Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Gentlemen, hook up your batteries. The little race is on.

While Indy drivers are revving up, hundreds of other ”drivers” will gather in two Chicago suburbs for the eighth Slot Car World Championships and the Midwest Oval Championships of the Radio Operators Automobile Racing Association (ROAR).

This ain`t kidstuff, Mario. The 8-inch electric slot cars cost up to $500 apiece, not counting the $150 spare engines. There`ll be $50,000 at stake, too, when 300 drivers from 22 countries meet starting Sunday at the eight-lane Grand Raceway in suburban Broadview, supposedly the world`s fastest track.

The radio-controlled electric cars will race on a 125-by-48-foot oval Friday through Sunday at Metro/Fast Raceway and Hobby in Hanover Park.

Both events are open to the public, and anyone with a ”car” can enter.
