Your editorial May 15 labeling the Chicago Building Code as ”notorious” and ”obsolete” is a bit much. Building codes are created to protect the health and safety of city residents. Making life easier for do-it-yourself rehabbers and absentee landlords is not a function of the building codes.

There is absolutely no hard cause-and-effect evidence that ”costly, obsolete, hard-to-install materials and extravagant, old-fashioned building methods” add $12,000 to the cost of a $60,000 building.
