Despite the hint of a commercial return in his recent duet with Annie Lennox (”Put a Little Love in Your Heart”), Al Green remains firmly committed to gospel music. In fact, the closer Green sticks to those roots-on the joyous title track or moving numbers such as ”The End Is Near” and
”Mighty Cloud Of Joy”-the more successful he is. Some longtime fans may still miss the secular songs and the sleek sounds of Memphis soul, but Green still is a great soul singer-in all senses of the term-who refreshingly communicates the joy he gets from his music and faith.
