The Citizens Utility Board consumer group on Wednesday predicted refunds of $50 to $75 for customers of Commonwealth Edison Co. after the Illinois Supreme Court refused to review a finding that the utility`s rates were too high last summer.
In December, the Illinois Appellate Court ruled that Edison should have cut its rates 25 percent last summer instead of 13 percent. Last week, the Supreme Court declined to hear Edison`s appeal of that finding.
With no other court options, the Illinois Commerce Commission must determine whether a refund is warranted and the size of any refund. CUB said it believes Edison overcharged its customers $158 million last summer, meaning each is entitled to between $50 and $75. Edison spokesman John Hogan said the utility believes no refund is in order.
