I find Bill Kasper`s letter (Voice of the people, June 6) irresponsible and offensive. Most animal shelters and anticruelty societies are privately funded, nonprofit organizations ill-equipped to handle the overcrowding caused by the increasing number of stray or abandoned cats and dogs.
If Mr. Kasper takes such macho pride in letting his pet ”live . . . as a cat, tomcatting around town,” I hope he is prepared to assume the financial burden of the litters of unwanted kittens his ”Elvis” begets.
I hope, too, that Mr. Kasper is at peace with the realization that most of those kittens will die of poor health or injuries, abuse, starvation or euthanasia-not as someone`s loving companion and worse than ”someone`s piece of furniture.”
