John McCarron`s June 12 article on our report ”Government Spending for the Poor: Can We Do Better?” is an accurate and thorough presentation.
Unfortunately the headline ”Welfare cost too high” is both inaccurate and misleading. The report never uses these words nor suggests this finding.
Rather, it concludes that too little welfare money is received by the poor in cash and too much is given to service providers. Our point is not that too much is spent, but that too little of what is spent ever actually gets to the poor.
