Somewhere in China there are students who, if allowed to read about the Supreme Court`s decision in the flag-burning case, undoubtedly would think what a wonderful country this must be. In China, you are murdered for protesting in ways the government does not like; in the United States, even protest by desecrating a national symbol cannot be punished.
And therein lies the irony of the movement to adopt a constitutional amendment taking flag-burning out of the class of protected symbolic speech:
The best reason for not wanting to burn our flag is that you can. An amendment taking that right away diminishes us. How disappointing.
