”We show the audience ways of handling everyday problems,” said Cynthia Power, describing her 3-year-old cable show, ”Life Enrichment Series”
(Wheaton-Centel Ch. 37).
Cynthia and her husband, Tom, Wheaton psychologists who operate a counseling practice from their home, produce and host the show.
”Some people can`t afford counseling,” Cynthia said. The show is designed to give viewers ”some real good nuggets that would be of a self-help nature.”
Their practice, Cynthia explained, is about 50 percent marriage counseling. Tom also specializes in agoraphobia (fear of being in public places) and other phobias; Cynthia`s area of expertise is sexual dysfunction. One installment of the program, titled ”High Honesty/Low Stress,”
was devoted to using assertiveness to reduce stress, Cynthia said. Other shows have dealt with time management, eating disorders, phobias and on anger and conflict resolution.
”Another was on PMS and menopause. Believe me, that affects husbands and children as well as women,” Cynthia said.
Since the show`s debut in October, 1986, nine one-hour programs have been completed.
New programs to be taped this fall will deal with cocaine addiction, adult children living at home with their parents, and how to handle an aging parent`s move into the home of one of his children.
