The July 18 piece ”Abortion decision is discriminatory” by George I. Goldstein, M.D., president, Lake County Medical Society, reveals a seriously mistaken attitude and perception. What has become of our revered medical profession when its practitioners are encouraged to view pregnancy as a
”medical condition” and abortion as a ”treatment”?
The doctor`s logic defies understanding. He interprets Thomas Jefferson`s ” . . . that all men are created equal” to include equality of opportunity to procure an abortion but is inconceivably oblivious to the equality of opportunity for the life of a helpless human being.
The doctor is concerned ”that we physicians educate our patients about how . . . this decision can make them less equal . . .” aparently without realizing that he sentences the most vulnerable human being to a most unequal nonstatus.
