A hint of the frantic keeps bursting out of pianist Don Pullen`s straight ahead jazz on this trio album with drummer Tony Williams and bassist Gary Peacock. ”Once Upon a Time,” for example, veers from the lovely mood suggested by the title into a mad waltz fit for a nightmare. The effect, though, is to domesticate the unruly elements rather than to succumb to them, and this is what distinguishes jazz from noise. (Reviewed on cassette.)
