I would like to take a moment to talk about the Chicago public school teachers in a way we haven`t seen in the papers too often.
This much-maligned group has caught the nation`s eye as being responsible, in part, for what some have called our nation`s worst public school system.
For four weeks after classes let out for the summer, about 50 Chicago math and science teachers drove out to Fermilab in Batavia to attend a summer institute designed to sharpen their knowledge and teaching skills. The commute for some was as much as two hours one way. Class schedules went for six hours a day, yet these teachers were dedicated enough to their profession, and their students, to make this type of commitment.
Throughout the four weeks I could not help but be impressed with the enthusiasm and interest these teachers demonstrated.
