One of the articles in The Tribune regarding the traders indicted in the Board of Trade-Mercantile Exchange fraud investigation referred to one of those indicted, Martin Dempsey, as a ”loud, stocky Irishman.” I don`t know Mr. Dempsey, but I believe I could have concluded on my own that he was-at least on his father`s side-of Irish descent.
I wonder if your copy editors would have allowed another of those indicted, say Sheldon Schneider, to be described as a ”tall, overbearing Jew,” if such a description were even remotely accurate, or John A. Vercillo, another indictee, as a ”swarthy, furtive Italian,” if that were true?
I also wonder if it was necessary to note that another of those indicted, Donald Callahan, is a ”devoted family man” who attends daily mass.
