When the State of Illinois Building was being built, I sometimes took a few minutes to watch the workers at their labor. One day when the building was near completion, I remarked to a man standing nearby, ”Ugly, isn`t it?” He replied in a thick drawl, ”We`ve got ugly in Texas but nothing to compare with this.”
Now that the perpetrator of this expensive and inefficient eyesore has said he won`t run for another term, I propose renaming it ”the James R. Thompson Building” as a monument to his administration.
