In recent days and weeks, Operation PUSH and its spokesmen have criticized the school reform movement for the involvement of ”outsiders” and asserted that a student population that is 60 percent black confers some special status on Operation PUSH.
Maybe somebody should remind PUSH that the public schools are just that-public schools. And as public schools, no citizen can be an ”outsider.”
Further, public schools are a national resource. Parents with children in school, parents with children no longer in school, citizens with no children, the business community, labor organizations, political organizations-all have a stake in the public schools and pay for their upkeep.
If PUSH wants to own a school system, let it start its own.
