Cubs are 84-56, in NL East lead, 1/2 games ahead of New York.

– 1959-Billy Pierce, in his first outing since Aug. 15, beats the A`s 2-1 in opener of Labor Day twin bill at Comiskey Park, and Ted Kluszewski hits 2 homers for 5 RBIs as the Sox win 13-7 for a sweep. Al Smith and Jim Rivera also homer in Game 2. Jim Landis goes 6 for 8 on the day. Sox are 85-52, in 1st place, 4 1/2 games ahead of Cleveland.
