Local cable news programs in Downers Grove have been known by a variety of names since ”Village News Capsule” debuted in 1984. There was ”Village News 20” followed by ”Village News Digest.” Then there was a hiatus until last spring when, in its latest incarnation, the news show came back as

”Channel 29 News.”

”The problem is trying to keep a consistent news staff,” explained the show`s producer and director Gregg Peters, the station`s former cable coordinator.

After seven years at the station, seeing the operation through all its news shows, Peters himself left last week to accept a position with a Chicago production company.

One reason for the station`s high turnover is its dependence on interns, who usually work at the station for a limited time. Anchorwoman Valerie Vasys, for example, started in July and quit this month to take an internship with

”Entertainment Tonight.”

The show goes on with part-timer Doug Kozlowski as temporary anchor and cable coordinator until a permanent replacements are found.

”Putting together a news show-it takes a lot of work,” Kozlowski said.

”For a two-minute story you have to shoot 20 minutes of footage.”

Kozlowksi will be assisted by Paul Baumgartner, Scott Baker and newcomer Mark Krueger.

”Channel 29 News” is cablecast at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and is repeated at 12:30 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday.
