One of the more intriguing figures in `80s music is the Canadian-born Lanois, who has produced acclaimed LPs by U2, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson and Bob Dylan. ”Acadie” also bears his unmistakable imprint: the moody, hovering arrangements, the deft layering of acoustic and electronic sounds, and the spare, yet evocative instrumentation. What`s remarkable is how well Lanois sings. Though he lacks Bono`s range or Gabriel`s passion, Lanois`
delivery is warm and intimate as he covers wide stylistic ground-from the bolero trance of ”Where the Hawkwind Kills” to the cajun swing of ”Jolie Louise.” On ”Acadie,” Lanois proves that he`s not just a terrific producer, but a compelling performer as well.
