After reading ”Knowledge of our past begets wisdom in future” and the humanities test (Oct. 15), it was shocking to see the results of how the college seniors did on the test. I am convinced that schools, especially at the lower levels, must start doing a better job of teaching the basics.

I agree with Charles M. Madigan when he says, ”The nation is in trouble as far as the study of history and the humanities is concerned.” It is so sad to imagine that only 58 percent of the college seniors who took the test know when the Civil War was fought.

If history and the arts aren`t taught early on and carried through college, how can we be expected to live in the present?
