Recently at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, (the free world`s largest military installation), I was privileged to hear remarks by Brig. Gen. Steve McElroy which were so direct and ridiculously obvious that they can hardly be disputed. In essence:
Gorbachev is the linchpin of Soviet ”peacefulness.” Without him, who knows? And his political position may be fragile.
Despite Gorbachev`s overtures, this year Soviets have produced more tanks and armaments than before-and in the face of a failing economy.
Also, America is the envy of many others. Often, those who can`t compete, seek to destroy.
Freedom is expensive. Peace is cheap-just surrender.
We mustn`t disarm quite yet on the mere chance of peace.
Air Force slogans and epigrams, perhaps, but those words aren`t from warmakers but from peacekeepers whose last priority is to have to use their terrifying power.
