Thanks to William B. Howell for pointing out the inconsistency of classical music station WFMT`s airing a talk show as ”grating” as Studs Terkel`s. Even worse is WNIB`s devoting entire Saturday afternoons to old radio programs, including ”Jack Armstrong, the All-American Boy.”
The perversity of both classical music stations was never more in evidence than last Christmas when I was trimming my tree and looking for soothing background music. WNIB was airing an old Jack Benny show and WFMT had poetry readings from someone with a voice as grating and toneless as Terkel`s. As a last resort I turned to WJKL, which features pop music from the
`40s, and as I finished my tree, my background music was the Andrews Sisters singing ”Drinking Rum and Coca Cola.”
