Wally Backman, a free-agent infielder who wanted to return to the National League after one season with the Minnesota Twins, signed a one-year contract Wednesday with the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Backman`s contract includes a $150,000 signing bonus, $250,000 in base salary and $500,000 in incentives that could make the deal worth $900,000.
Pirates General Manager Larry Doughty said Backman, 30, will back up second baseman Jose Lind and third baseman Jeff King, who played only 13 games there last season.
