The Esquire Theater, which was to reopen Friday for the public with showings of ”My Left Foot” and three other films, got off on the wrong foot as the doors remained shut because of poor reviews by fire inspectors.
”They`re not up to code yet,” said Fire Department spokesman Tom Sheppard. A private reopening party Thursday night at the theater, 58 E. Oak St., was delayed by fire inspectors, who kept some guests on the sidewalk in the rain for a time because of concerns over the fire code.
Ald. Burton Natarus (42nd) said the problems at the Esquire, which has undergone a $4 million renovation, center on its alarm system. He was not sure when the theater would reopen, though police said Thursday that it could be a matter of just a few days.
