Here are some elegant and sophisticated sweet endings to a romantic dinner for two that take no preparation time at all:

– Chilled sparkling wine poured over lemon sorbet or equal amounts of each mixed in the blender, served immediately in a crystal goblet with a spoon.

– Cantucci cookies dipped in Vin Santo (very Italian).

– A glass of Sauternes or port wine served with an enticing plate of sliced fresh pear, Roquefort or Gorgonzola cheese, and a cluster of toasted walnuts.

– Fresh strawberries dipped in Muscat wine . . . or melted bittersweet chocolate.

– Slice of pound cake with ice cream and a quality topping (look for American Spoon Fruit Toppings for a special effect).

– Forget a traditional dessert, relax over a cup of steaming espresso or cappuccino with chocolate truffles (the best are freshly made truffles from the Belgian Chocolatier-Piron, 509 Main St., Evanston).
